By February, the rush of the New Year has settled into a steadier rhythm.
At Good for the Hood, we believe the best changes aren’t the ones that require a massive overhaul, instead they’re the simple, everyday habits that just feel good.
Sustainability is often found in the quiet moments: the magic of a kid on a bike exploring their street, or the simple joy of being present in your own neighbourhood. When we focus on our 'Hood,' the world feels a little more connected and a lot more manageable.
This month, we’re leaning into those 'Slow & Steady' wins:
The Local Loop: A daily walk to see what’s blooming (and catching a neighbour for a quick hello!).
Mindful Moments: Noticing the birds or the breeze instead of a screen.
Resourceful Living: Noticing when a light or heater isn't needed and flicking it off. It’s a quiet way to respect our energy resources every single day.
It’s not about being perfect; it’s about enjoying the ride.
Tell us: What’s one small habit that’s making your local hood feel a bit brighter lately?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the state of our planet, we want you to know: your feelings are valid.
It’s a sign that you care deeply about our home. But you don’t have to weather the storm alone.
Last year when we sat down with Cooper Chapman (@thegoodhumanfactory) what he shared really stuck with us, and we think it will stick with you too.
He shared three simple anchors to help keep us grounded when the seas get rough while navigating eco anxiety.
1. Appreciation: Reconnect with what you’re protecting. Tonight, while you brush your teeth, name 3 things you loved about nature today.
2. Awareness: Ground yourself in the 'now.' If your mind starts racing, stop and notice 5 things you can see, hear, or feel right in this moment.
3. Action: Action is the ultimate antidote to despair. No matter how small the step, swapping a cup, sorting a bin, or starting a conversation, your impact matters.
Which of the '3 A's' do you need to lean into today?

Who says you need a sprawling backyard to be a producer?
As the incredible Sahar El-Chiekh (founder @sahars_suburban_garden) showed us in our @ HOME session, you can transform even the tiniest balcony or windowsill into a productive paradise.
It’s not about how much space you have; it’s about how you use it.
From 'cut and come again' silverbeet to the magic of a watermelon radish, growing your own food is empowering, delicious, and the ultimate stress-release.

Let's be real, with the cost of living right now, throwing away a limp bag of spinach feels like throwing cash straight into the bin!
Sustainable living isn't just about the planet, it’s about your pocket, too!
Last year we teamed up with organisation expert @homesanct Sally Flower and community member Carrie to help you 'Tame the Fridge Beast' and keep your grocery bill under control.
The secret? It’s all about visibility and storage. From 'shopping your pantry' first to creating a 'Use It Up' box, these small habits ensure that the food you buy actually makes it onto your plate.

The #1 Rule of Gardening? Grow what you actually LIKE to eat.
We often get caught up in what we think we should grow (looking at you, kale), but as @natasha_morgan_ Natasha Morgan reminded us in our Wicking Bed session, the secret to a successful garden is motivation.
And nothing motivates you more than a harvest you actually want to put on your plate!
If your family lives on tacos, grow coriander and chillies.
If you’re a pasta lover, fill those wicking beds with basil and tomatoes.
The goal isn’t to have a perfect garden; it’s to have a delicious one.
What’s the one thing you’d eat every single day if you grew it yourself? Tell us below!

Next time you’re stressing over a gift idea, stop looking at the shops and start looking at your garden.
We often forget that the simplest things, a jar of homemade relish, a bunch of fresh-cut herbs, or a bag of backyard lemons, are the most meaningful gifts we can give.
They carry the story of your home and the time you took to grow or create something from scratch.
Gifting your harvest isn't just about sharing food; it’s about growing the invisible threads that connect us to our neighbours.
It’s the ultimate 'Good for the Hood' win-win: less waste, more joy, and a whole lot of local love.
Swipe through for some 'Gifting the Hood' inspiration!

Thinking ahead for the upcoming months... did you know you might already be sitting on the most cost-effective heater in your home?
We sat down with energy legend Tim Forcey (@myefficientelectrichome), and he dropped this absolute gem.
Most of us think of our air cons as 'cooling only,' but using them to heat your home is a total game-changer for your comfort, and your bank account.
It’s time to ditch the gas and lean into the tools we already have!
Tim’s Top Tips for a Cozy (and Cheap) Home:
- Seal the Leaks: Draught-proof those doors and windows.
- Insulation is Key: Check your roof, it’s the 'hat' that keeps your home's temperature steady.
- Renter Hack: Bubble-wrap your windows in winter to trap heat. It sounds wild, but it works!
Have you made the switch to heating with your AC yet? Tell us if you've noticed the difference in your bills!

Strong communities are the backbone of any real change.
We can’t build a sustainable future in isolation; we need a 'Good Hood' to make it happen.
Why do neighbourly bonds matter? Shared resources: Think tool libraries, carpooling, or swapping garden gluts.
Collective resilience: Being there for each other when the going gets tough.
The Ripple Effect: One small conversation about a compost bin or solar panels can inspire an entire street.
Change doesn’t always start with a protest or a policy. Most of the time, it begins with a simple, 'Hello, I'm Jo from next door.'
This week, we’re challenging you to pause and think: Do you know the people living on your left and right?
A better future starts with a better relationship. Who’s one neighbour you’re grateful for having in your hood?

Did you know that the humble Brush Turkey is actually a high-speed composting machine?!
By scratching through leaf litter and garden 'waste,' they break down organic matter and enrich our soil faster than we ever could.
But here’s the catch: they can’t do their job in a perfectly manicured, concrete-heavy yard. They need a bit of leaf litter and 'wild' space to thrive.
It’s a great reminder that sometimes, being a little less tidy is actually better for the planet.
This got us thinking... when it comes to the great Australian backyard, are you Team Wild (room for the turkeys!) or Team Tidy? Let’s settle the debate in the comments! 👇

Did you know you could be throwing away half your harvest?
We’re used to waiting for the "main event", the pumpkin, the broccoli head, the beetroot. But as the incredible Morag Gamble reminded us, there is a hidden harvest hiding in plain sight!
Morag sees food everywhere. From pumpkin leaves (delicious in a stir-fry!) to broccoli greens and even the "weeds" at our feet, our veggie patches are far more productive than we realise.
When we start to eat the "whole plant," we:
- Slash our food waste.
- Discover incredible new flavours.
- Get way more value out of every seed we plant.
It’s time to stop looking for just the fruit and start looking at the whole garden.
Have you ever tried eating something "unconventional" from your garden? Tell us your favourite "hidden" harvest below!

Ever feel like composting is a mystical ritual only seasoned gardeners can master?
We get it, the thought of food scraps can feel a bit… well, icky.
But as environmental guru Mel Bargwanna reminded us in an @ HOME session last year: if kids can do it, anyone can!
Composting isn't about being perfect; it’s about finding the right balance of 'greens' and 'browns' to turn your kitchen waste into Garden Gold. Whether you have a sprawling backyard or a tiny apartment balcony, there’s a system that can work for your lifestyle.

Happy 2026!
Every New Year, we talk about 'more', more goals, more habits, more plans.
But what if this year was about less?
We’re revisiting the wise words of decluttering coach Mary Stewart from our Resourceful Living Challenge.

Amidst the rush of decorating and gift-buying, it’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed by the "more, more, more" of the season.
Last year, sustainability expert Emma Avery joined us for a session that shifted our perspective.
Her biggest takeaway? Sustainability isn’t just about the planet; it’s a pathway to a more mindful, calm, and joyful holiday.
If you're looking to slow down and stay green this year, here are 3 ways to embrace a "Less is More" mindset:
1. Curate, Don’t Just Decorate. Emma suggests a mindful "Less is More" approach to styling. Instead of using every single box of tinsel, curate your absolute favourite pieces. It reduces waste, looks elegant, and creates a calmer space to breathe in.
2. Nature’s Gift Wrap. Turn gift-wrapping into a slow, creative ritual. Use brown paper or fabric scraps and decorate with dried citrus or sprigs of greenery. It’s a beautiful way to stay present and skip the plastic tape.
3. Gift with Intention. To cut through the noise, Emma recommends the "Want, Need, Wear, Read" rule. It’s a gentle way to simplify your list, save money, and ensure every gift is truly meaningful.
Which one of Emma’s tips are you trying this year? Let us know below!

We gathered some seriously practical tips from energy expert Tim Forcey, @myefficientelectrichome on how to make your home comfortable and cheaper to run, no matter if you own or rent!
1. Roof Insulation is Key: Your roof is a heat magnet! Proper insulation prevents summer sun from baking your home and drastically reduces the need for cooling.
2. Draught-Proofing: Don't let cool air escape! Seal gaps around windows and doors to keep the refreshing air inside (and the hot air out).
3. Use Your AC Guilt-Free: Modern reverse-cycle air conditioners are the most energy-efficient way to cool your home. Use them to maintain a comfortable temperature without the financial worry.
4. Renter Hack: Block the Sun! If you can't insulate, use Renshade (a perforated aluminium film) on sunny windows. This simple, temporary trick blocks solar heat and keeps indoor temperatures down.
5. Electrify: Switching from gas to electric appliances is cheaper, healthier, and better for the environment in the long run!
Which of these have you already done, and which of these things are you thinking of doing before it's summertime?
Ready to stay cool without the huge bills?
We are hosting a FREE Sustainable Home Forum, which is packed with practical ways to tackle the summer heat and cut energy costs.

Are you throwing away the best parts of your veggies?
That's right—we're talking about more food and less waste!
If you’re like most of us, when you think of broccoli, you think of the head—the florets. But what about the magnificent leaves and stalks?
Global permaculture educator, Morag Gamble, (@moraggamble), revealed in a recent workshop that these are not only edible but also packed with flavour and nutrients.
The industrial food system often discards these parts, but in your own kitchen, they become delicious additions to your meals.
This "whole plant" philosophy is a game-changer! Swipe through the carousel to discover the edible parts of plants you might be missing, like:
🍠 Beetroot leaves & stalks
🎃 Pumpkin skin & shoots
🌿 Mulberry and Citrus leaves for tea!
By embracing curiosity, we get so much more from our food.
Which edible "scrap" are you going to rescue first? Tell us below! 👇
One of the best things we learned from Sahar, @sahars_suburban_garden is that your lack of a permanent backyard is zero barrier to an abundant edible garden.
The secret? Container Gardening!
For renters and those with small spaces, containers turn your garden into a portable, flexible asset that you can take with you when your lease is up.
No digging up beds or leaving behind your hard work!
Main things to consider:
- Opt for lightweight containers like fabric grow bags (Sahar's favourite!) They're easy to lift, promote root health, and fold flat when empty.
- Start Simple: Plants like mint, parsley, and radishes are quick to harvest and thrive in small pots.
- Always use a good quality, light potting mix in your containers, NOT heavy garden soil. (Trust us on this!)
Don't wait for the "perfect" house to start growing. Your green paradise could be just a pot away!
We'd love to know, if you're considering planting your garden in containers, what is the first thing you're going to plant?

Ready to grow beautiful produce while cutting your water use? Wicking beds are the ultimate self-watering genius!
They use up to 50% less water than traditional gardens because the reservoir stops surface evaporation and lets your plants hydrate efficiently.
That's a huge sustainable win!
The best part? Wicking beds are champions of repurposing!
Our recent workshop host, Natasha, @natasha_morgan_ showed us a fantastic DIY conversion using a second-hand IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container).
Old bathtubs, stock troughs, or even lined crates work great too! Sustainable sourcing is half the fun!
Natasha’s Pro-Tip from the recent workshop she ran for us: Use the full height of your chosen vessel. A deeper container means a bigger water reservoir, which gives you more flexibility and less watering! 💧💚

Swap the mower for magic. A pollinator patch filled with native grasses, daisies, and climbers like Hardenbergia not only saves water and effort, it also creates a haven for birds, bees, and other vital insects.
If you are after more colour, life, and buzz in your garden, try planting local natives that thrive in your climate and watch the pollinators fly in this summer.... 🐝🪲🌷

Most of us have little tricks to keep food out of the bin, such as freezing veggie scraps for stock, making leftovers into lunch, or getting creative with what’s in the fridge.
They don’t have to be big changes, but they do make a real impact.

Did you know your compost needs oxygen to break down properly? Without enough air, it can turn slimy, smelly, and slow to decompose. Aerating your compost helps the microbes thrive, speeds up the process, and gives you richer soil.
A simple tool like an aerator makes the job easy, just twist it through your pile to keep everything fluffy and full of oxygen. Healthy compost = healthy garden.
Eco-anxiety can feel overwhelming for the young people in our lives, but there are ways we can support them and build resilience together.
Appreciation – Reconnect with Nature
Encourage time outdoors. Whether it’s a bushwalk, a swim, or just sitting in the garden, reconnecting with nature helps reduce stress and reminds us all why caring for the planet matters.
Awareness – Stay Present and Mindful
Simple mindfulness habits can ground us in the here and now. Try walking together and noticing what you see, hear, and feel. Shared moments like these build calm and connection.
Action – Take Simple, Sustainable Steps
Every small action counts. Bring a reusable cup, sort your waste, switch off unused devices, join a clean-up, or connect with a local group. When we act alongside young people, eco-anxiety can shift into hope and collective power.
Supporting youth isn’t about fixing everything at once, but about showing up with presence, care, and action they can believe in.
Living further south Our Permaculture Life: Morag Gambles olive tree wasn’t producing many olives, but that didn’t stop her from making the most of it.
She discovered another gift hiding in its branches: the leaves can be brewed into a nourishing olive leaf tea.
💚 Packed with antioxidants and known to support immunity and overall wellbeing, this simple brew shows that every tree has more to give than meets the eye.
✨ A little reminder that abundance can come in unexpected forms.

Think your veggie scraps are done for? Think again.
From spring onions to sweet potatoes, your kitchen leftovers could be the start of your next harvest. It’s cheaper, more sustainable, and oddly satisfying to grow your own food from what you almost threw away.
Here are 10 veggies you can regrow at home:
🧅 Spring onions – Pop the white roots in a glass of water, and they’ll regrow in days.
🥬 Lettuce – Place the base in a shallow dish of water and watch new leaves sprout.
🥬 Celery – Same method as lettuce. Regrows beautifully from the base.
🧄 Garlic – Plant a single clove, and it will grow into a full bulb.
🥔 Potatoes – Got a spud with “eyes”? Cut and plant it for a whole new crop.
🍠 Sweet potatoes – Place in water until it sprouts, then plant in soil.
🥕 Carrot tops – While you won’t get a new carrot, the greens are edible and regrow easily. (Hello carrot top pesto!)
🥬 Bok choy – Just like celery and lettuce, pop the base in water to regrow.
🧅 Leeks – Treat them like spring onions—super simple to regrow.
🌿 Basil, coriander & mint – Place cuttings in water until roots form, then pot them.

Help create a circular economy and prevent more being added to landfills by dropping off your old, punctured and blown tyres to organisations such as @recyclebiketyres in Victoria or your local @99bikes stores across the country.
They will sort and recycle them to be made into all kinds of things like roads, athletic tracks, and playground surfaces.

You know how being kind feels good? There’s a reason for that... it's your brain is literally rewiring itself.
When you’re kind, it feels good… which makes you want to do it more. That’s your reward pathway lighting up and reinforcing the habit. And on a neuro level, gratitude boosts oxytocin, helping your brain rewire itself to see things in a more positive light.
Not just woo-woo—this is science-backed goodness 💛
This snippet came from our recent @ HOME event, where we sat down with Cooper Chapman from Thegoodhumanfactory to unpack the science of gratitude, the heart, and why it all matters more than we think 💛
We had a ball checking out the latest sustainability trends in edu action technology at the EduTech expo.

Australian charity shops spend around $13 million annually to dispose of unsellable clothes in landfills!!!
Let's reduce that cost on charity shops and find ways to reuse, repurpose, and recycle our old clothes that are no longer wearable.
Here are our suggestions:
✨Contact animal shelters and see if they are after donations of towels
✨Send a 10kg box of clothes to @upparelofficial for them to repurpose
✨Tear them up and use them as cloths
✨Many councils have a textile recycling bin
✨Ask yourself first, could I repair this item and wear it a while longer?
Do you have any other suggestions on how to prevent old clothes from ending up in landfil you could share with the group? Comment below 👇

For Herbs
You can use water, oil, or even a mix of both to freeze herbs in ice cube trays. Once frozen, you can use the herb cubes in soups, sauces, or stir-fries.
For Lemon
Slice thinly and freeze on a baking tray, once frozen, transfer to a freezer bag for up to 4 months. Great for garnishes in a cheeky cocktail or for a lemon cake!

"Reduce before you produce.” 🌞
In our recent @ HOME session, energy expert Seb Crangle reminded us: before investing in solar, focus on reducing your energy use first.
Here’s what that looks like:
>Use thermal curtains to keep heat in
>Lay down rugs to warm up cold floors
>Close doors to rooms you’re not using
> Heat people, not rooms, try electric throws or blankets
>Swap out your showerhead to cut hot water use (and bills)
These small, renter-friendly changes make your home more efficient now, so if you do add solar later, you’re getting the best bang for your buck.
💬 What’s one thing you’ll try this winter?
Feeling the pinch with your power bills?
Before you jump into solar panels, there’s something way more effective (and cheaper!) to start with. Heres a sneak peek at our latest @ HOME workshop, where we talked about easy ways to make your home more energy efficient, like draft-proofing and smart appliance swaps that can make a big difference.

One of my fave appliance features? Delayed start ⏰
I set it so my washing machine runs during the day because I can time things like the washing machine to run during the day, right when there’s the most renewable energy hitting the grid.
It’s a simple little habit that helps reduce emissions and makes life a bit easier.
Do you use delayed start for the same reason? Or have a sneaky sustainable habit you swear by?

We asked energy efficiency expert Tim Forcey - @myefficientelectrichome this very question during our recent @ HOME event, and the answer is a resounding... YES! 🥳
Tim broke it down for us, explaining that reverse cycle air conditioners (also known as heat pumps) are super efficient because they don't just create heat – they actually move it from the air outside into your home. It's like they're magic heat transporters! ✨
Here's the juicy bit: Tim says heating with an air conditioner can cost as little as a THIRD of what you'd spend on gas heating. 🤯 That's like getting three times the warmth for the same price!
So, if you've been wondering whether to ditch the gas heater and embrace the air conditioner, the answer is clear. You'll stay cozy AND save money. It's a win-win!
Have you made the switch to air conditioner heating? Share your experience in the comments below! 👇

Renting & freezing? You don’t need to spend a fortune (or get your landlord’s approval) to stay warm this winter!
Here are some more renter-friendly tips from home energy expert Seb Crangle from @Home Energy Advisor to make your home feel less like a fridge:
✔️ Shut doors to rooms you’re not using to keep heat where you need it
✔️ Use thermal curtains to stop heat escaping through windows
✔️ Layer rugs over cold floors, your feet will thank you
💡Little changes = big comfort.
👇Which of these do you already do? Got a warm-up hack to share with other renters? Let us know in the comments!
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve done to save on your energy bills?
Jo Taranto bubble-wrapped her office windows. Not exactly a Pinterest-worthy look... but it worked! Cheap, quick, and an instant DIY double glaze. 🙌
We get it. When your power bills keep climbing and options are limited, especially if you’re renting, you get creative.
Here’s the thing:
> Bubble wrap can help reduce heat loss through single-glazed windows
> Just spray water on the window and press the bubble side on
> Easy to remove with no damage
Got a quirky energy-saving hack of your own? Share it below 👇
Great question and yeah, it can feel a bit backwards.
But when you pay for accredited GreenPower, you’re not just buying renewable energy, you’re also helping fund more renewable infrastructure. That means more solar farms, more wind turbines, and a faster transition to clean energy.
Right now, we’re in a transition period, and building new stuff is pricey! But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing. The more we invest, the cheaper and more accessible green power becomes in the long run.
So yeah, it costs a little more now, but you’re literally helping build a cleaner future every time you pay that bill. Worth it? We think so.

Our recent composting chat with Mel Bargwanna busted myths and brought the good dirt (literally).
>It’s all about balance.
> Green = food scraps, grass clippings (adds nitrogen)
> Brown = cardboard, coffee grounds, dry leaves (adds carbon)
Think of it like a compost cake: layer it up and let the magic happen.
Save this post and tag a mate who still thinks composting is “too hard”
