In April, we worked with Hornsby Council to make some good in the Hornsby 'hood!

Our Rethinking Waste (For Good) workshop helped attendees consider a proposition about how they can rethink waste, manage consumption, and implement the circular economy model into their communities.

Co-founder Jo Taranto talked about what it takes to bring behaviour change and the importance of having a community of local change-makers working together to create sustainable good 'hoods.

Attendees also had a chance to share their 'Waste Woes' about the waste that they found most difficult and frustrating to dispose of 'properly'

So how can we tackle these 'waste woes'?

The workshop covered the foundations of the circular economy model and looked at five business models of a circular economy. We shared some tips to incorporate it into the Hornsby 'hood.

Our passionate group of Good Doers also discussed the importance of connections and community when improving circularity and shared some existing projects, resources, people, locations, and events in their local area.

Some of the good 'hood initiatives discussed included:

  • Move It On
  • Arnies Recon
  • The Village Project
  • Thornleigh E-Waste facility: Community Recycling Centre
  • Hornsby Freecycle
  • Bower Reuse & Repair Centre
  • Reverse Garbage
  • Return and Earn Blue Bins

The workshop concluded with a brainstorm of 10 exciting ways to incorporate the circular economy into our communities.

Overall attendees shared "there is hope for micro action on ecological issues" and "it's ok to start small"; reflecting that while significant shifts are required by all levels of government and industry, local grassroots projects play an important role in rethinking our consumption habits.
