Don’t toss those coffee grounds and eggshells...your garden loves them.
☕ Coffee grounds add nitrogen to your soil and help keep slugs and snails away.
🥚 Crushed eggshells are rich in calcium and can improve soil structure while deterring pests.
It’s one of the easiest (and cheapest!) ways to nourish your plants and reduce food waste at the same time.

Think your veggie scraps are done for? Think again.
From spring onions to sweet potatoes, your kitchen leftovers could be the start of your next harvest. It’s cheaper, more sustainable, and oddly satisfying to grow your own food from what you almost threw away.
Here are 10 veggies you can regrow at home:
🧅 Spring onions – Pop the white roots in a glass of water, and they’ll regrow in days.
🥬 Lettuce – Place the base in a shallow dish of water and watch new leaves sprout.
🥬 Celery – Same method as lettuce. Regrows beautifully from the base.
🧄 Garlic – Plant a single clove, and it will grow into a full bulb.
🥔 Potatoes – Got a spud with “eyes”? Cut and plant it for a whole new crop.
🍠 Sweet potatoes – Place in water until it sprouts, then plant in soil.
🥕 Carrot tops – While you won’t get a new carrot, the greens are edible and regrow easily. (Hello carrot top pesto!)
🥬 Bok choy – Just like celery and lettuce, pop the base in water to regrow.
🧅 Leeks – Treat them like spring onions—super simple to regrow.
🌿 Basil, coriander & mint – Place cuttings in water until roots form, then pot them.

Australian charity shops spend around $13 million annually to dispose of unsellable clothes in landfills!!!
Let's reduce that cost on charity shops and find ways to reuse, repurpose, and recycle our old clothes that are no longer wearable.
Here are our suggestions:
✨Contact animal shelters and see if they are after donations of towels
✨Send a 10kg box of clothes to @upparelofficial for them to repurpose
✨Tear them up and use them as cloths
✨Many councils have a textile recycling bin
✨Ask yourself first, could I repair this item and wear it a while longer?

"Reduce before you produce.” 🌞
In our recent @ HOME session, energy expert Seb Crangle reminded us: before investing in solar, focus on reducing your energy use first.
Here’s what that looks like:
>Use thermal curtains to keep heat in
>Lay down rugs to warm up cold floors
>Close doors to rooms you’re not using
> Heat people, not rooms, try electric throws or blankets
>Swap out your showerhead to cut hot water use (and bills)
These small, renter-friendly changes make your home more efficient now, so if you do add solar later, you’re getting the best bang for your buck.

One of my fave appliance features? Delayed start ⏰
I set it so my washing machine runs during the day because I can time things like the washing machine to run during the day, right when there’s the most renewable energy hitting the grid.

Do you use delayed start for the same reason? Or have a sneaky sustainable habit you swear by?

We asked energy efficiency expert Tim Forcey - @myefficientelectrichome this very question during our recent @ HOME event, and the answer is a resounding... YES! 🥳
Tim broke it down for us, explaining that reverse cycle air conditioners (also known as heat pumps) are super efficient because they don't just create heat – they actually move it from the air outside into your home. It's like they're magic heat transporters! ✨
Here's the juicy bit: Tim says heating with an air conditioner can cost as little as a THIRD of what you'd spend on gas heating. 🤯 That's like getting three times the warmth for the same price!
So, if you've been wondering whether to ditch the gas heater and embrace the air conditioner, the answer is clear. You'll stay cozy AND save money. It's a win-win!

Renting & freezing? You don’t need to spend a fortune (or get your landlord’s approval) to stay warm this winter!
Here are some more renter-friendly tips from home energy expert Seb Crangle from @Home Energy Advisor to make your home feel less like a fridge:
✔️ Shut doors to rooms you’re not using to keep heat where you need it
✔️ Use thermal curtains to stop heat escaping through windows
✔️ Layer rugs over cold floors, your feet will thank you
💡Little changes = big comfort.
👇Which of these do you already do? Got a warm-up hack to share with other renters? Let us know in the comments!
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve done to save on your energy bills?
Jo Taranto bubble-wrapped her office windows. Not exactly a Pinterest-worthy look... but it worked! Cheap, quick, and an instant DIY double glaze. 🙌
We get it. When your power bills keep climbing and options are limited, especially if you’re renting, you get creative.
Here’s the thing:
> Bubble wrap can help reduce heat loss through single-glazed windows
> Just spray water on the window and press the bubble side on
> Easy to remove with no damage
Got a quirky energy-saving hack of your own? Share it below 👇
Great question and yeah, it can feel a bit backwards.
But when you pay for accredited GreenPower, you’re not just buying renewable energy, you’re also helping fund more renewable infrastructure. That means more solar farms, more wind turbines, and a faster transition to clean energy.
Right now, we’re in a transition period, and building new stuff is pricey! But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing. The more we invest, the cheaper and more accessible green power becomes in the long run.
So yeah, it costs a little more now, but you’re literally helping build a cleaner future every time you pay that bill. Worth it? We think so.

So many of us want to save on power bills and do right by the planet, but it’s just not that simple..
Jo’s biggest worry? That the people who need the most support with energy costs are the ones who can’t access solar or batteries. If you rent, or can’t afford the upfront costs, you’re often stuck paying more.
It raises a big question:
Why is clean, affordable energy still a privilege, and not a right?

One thing we learned at our recent @ Home event (Fix My Grocery Bills) is maximising kitchen storage isn’t just about neatness, it helps reduce food waste, improve meal planning, and save you serious money!
By organising your fridge (and pantry) smarter, you can:
✅ Keep food fresh longer
✅ Stop overbuying (hello to those three jars of mustard!)
✅ Meal prep with ease
✅ Save money and reduce waste
Simple changes like storing produce correctly, grouping items by category, and doing a quick “shop your pantry” check before grocery shopping can make a huge difference.
How often do you clean out your fridge?
Should my compost be in the sun or shade?
Short answer: It depends! But here’s the scoop: Keeping your compost in partial shade is usually the sweet spot. Too much sun? It might dry out too fast. Too much shade? It could stay too soggy.
The trick is moisture balance, you want it to feel like a wrung-out sponge. If you’re in a super-hot climate, some shade helps. If you’re in a cooler spot, a little sun can give it a boost. Experiment with what works best in your backyard!
Where do you keep your compost? 👇
With Jo Taranto
There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to pantry storage, it’s all about what works for you!
> Glass jars - They look good, are easy to clean, and make swapping ingredients a breeze. No need for labels if you like to mix things up!
> Tupperware - Stackable and great for airtight storage.
> Keep it simple - As long as you can see what you’ve got and it’s easy to grab, then you’re winning. No need for a Pinterest-perfect setup!
The key is to create a pantry that feels functional, not overwhelming.

My favorite composting style? Dalek-style!
It might sound like a sci-fi villain, but Dalek composting (aka cold composting) is my go-to method. Why?
✅ Low maintenance (great if you’re busy!)
✅ Just keep adding scraps, and let time do the work
✅ Works in small spaces
It’s not the fastest, but if you’re patient, you’ll end up with beautiful, crumbly compost, without much effort.

My favorite composting tool? My aerator!
Why? Because air is needed for life, for us and for our compost. Your pile needs oxygen to break down properly. No air = stinky, slimy mess. (And no one wants that.)
Using an aerator helps mix things up, prevents smells, and speeds up decomposition. Plus, it’s oddly satisfying to give your compost a good fluff!
Do you aerate your compost? Or just let nature do its thing? Let us know below! ⬇

Did you know? That extra rice, roasted veggies, or yesterday’s noodles can turn into a flavour packed meal with a spoonful of sambal!
In our latest event (A New Twist on Chilli Crisp) for our @ Home members we learnt how to make Sambal with Lucy from @whodoesthedishes
This spicy, umami-rich condiment adds depth, heat, and a little magic to just about anything.
Here are some easy ways to revive your leftovers with sambal:
🍚 Mix it into fried rice for an instant flavour boost
🥪 Spread it on toast with avo, eggs, or cheese
🥗 Stir it into dressings for a zesty salad upgrade
🍲 Add it to soups or stews for extra depth
Have you tried Sambal before?
The #1 composting mistake? Not enough “browns”!
It’s easy to toss in fruit peels and veggie scraps, but if your compost is too wet and smelly, it’s probably missing “browns” like:
>Shredded paper/newspaper
>Dry leaves
>Cardboard (plain, no glossy prints!)
Think 50/50 balance—for every handful of food scraps, add a handful of dry material. This keeps the pile from turning into a slimy, stinky mess and helps it break down faster.
What’s your go-to composting “brown”? Drop it in the comments! 👇🍂
Food waste doesn’t just disappear—it breaks down in landfills and releases a whopping 13 million tonnes of greenhouse gases every year. (2.5% of Australia's total annual emissions)
But here’s the good news: composting can change that. Whether you’ve got a big backyard or live in an apartment, there’s a composting solution for you.
🌱 Worm farms - Perfect for small spaces, these little guys turn food scraps into nutrient-rich soil.
🌱 Compost bins - Great for gardens, these let nature do the work with minimal effort.
🌱 Bokashi buckets - Speed up the process indoors with fermentation, then bury the scraps in soil.
🌱 Electric composters - A high-tech option that quickly breaks down food waste, even in a small kitchen.
🌱 Community compost bin - Check out your local community gardens to see if they're happy to take your scraps or chat to a neighbour, they may have worms that need feeding!
There’s no one-size-fits-all—just pick what works for you and start turning scraps into something good.
We’ve all been there – hidden food gets forgotten and ends up wasted.
Our top tip: Keep it in sight! Store fruits and veggies on the fridge door shelves so you see them every day. And for those long-lasting condiments, pop them in the veggie boxes.
This simple tweak can help cut down on waste and keep your kitchen sustainable.
