For Lemon
Slice thinly and freeze on a baking tray, once frozen, transfer to a freezer bag for up to 4 months. Great for garnishes in a cheeky cocktail or for a lemon cake!

"Reduce before you produce.” 🌞
In our recent @ HOME session, energy expert Seb Crangle reminded us: before investing in solar, focus on reducing your energy use first.
Here’s what that looks like:
>Use thermal curtains to keep heat in
>Lay down rugs to warm up cold floors
>Close doors to rooms you’re not using
> Heat people, not rooms, try electric throws or blankets
>Swap out your showerhead to cut hot water use (and bills)
These small, renter-friendly changes make your home more efficient now, so if you do add solar later, you’re getting the best bang for your buck.
💬 What’s one thing you’ll try this winter?
Feeling the pinch with your power bills?
Before you jump into solar panels, there’s something way more effective (and cheaper!) to start with. Heres a sneak peek at our latest @ HOME workshop, where we talked about easy ways to make your home more energy efficient, like draft-proofing and smart appliance swaps that can make a big difference.

One of my fave appliance features? Delayed start ⏰
I set it so my washing machine runs during the day because I can time things like the washing machine to run during the day, right when there’s the most renewable energy hitting the grid.
It’s a simple little habit that helps reduce emissions and makes life a bit easier.
Do you use delayed start for the same reason? Or have a sneaky sustainable habit you swear by?

We asked energy efficiency expert Tim Forcey - @myefficientelectrichome this very question during our recent @ HOME event, and the answer is a resounding... YES! 🥳
Tim broke it down for us, explaining that reverse cycle air conditioners (also known as heat pumps) are super efficient because they don't just create heat – they actually move it from the air outside into your home. It's like they're magic heat transporters! ✨
Here's the juicy bit: Tim says heating with an air conditioner can cost as little as a THIRD of what you'd spend on gas heating. 🤯 That's like getting three times the warmth for the same price!
So, if you've been wondering whether to ditch the gas heater and embrace the air conditioner, the answer is clear. You'll stay cozy AND save money. It's a win-win!

Renting & freezing? You don’t need to spend a fortune (or get your landlord’s approval) to stay warm this winter!
Here are some more renter-friendly tips from home energy expert Seb Crangle from @Home Energy Advisor to make your home feel less like a fridge:
✔️ Shut doors to rooms you’re not using to keep heat where you need it
✔️ Use thermal curtains to stop heat escaping through windows
✔️ Layer rugs over cold floors, your feet will thank you
💡Little changes = big comfort.
👇Which of these do you already do? Got a warm-up hack to share with other renters? Let us know in the comments!
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve done to save on your energy bills?
Jo Taranto bubble-wrapped her office windows. Not exactly a Pinterest-worthy look... but it worked! Cheap, quick, and an instant DIY double glaze. 🙌
We get it. When your power bills keep climbing and options are limited, especially if you’re renting, you get creative.
Here’s the thing:
> Bubble wrap can help reduce heat loss through single-glazed windows
> Just spray water on the window and press the bubble side on
> Easy to remove with no damage
Got a quirky energy-saving hack of your own? Share it below 👇
Great question and yeah, it can feel a bit backwards.
But when you pay for accredited GreenPower, you’re not just buying renewable energy, you’re also helping fund more renewable infrastructure. That means more solar farms, more wind turbines, and a faster transition to clean energy.
Right now, we’re in a transition period, and building new stuff is pricey! But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing. The more we invest, the cheaper and more accessible green power becomes in the long run.
So yeah, it costs a little more now, but you’re literally helping build a cleaner future every time you pay that bill. Worth it? We think so.

Our recent composting chat with Mel Bargwanna busted myths and brought the good dirt (literally).
>It’s all about balance.
> Green = food scraps, grass clippings (adds nitrogen)
> Brown = cardboard, coffee grounds, dry leaves (adds carbon)

So many of us want to save on power bills and do right by the planet, but it’s just not that simple..
Jo’s biggest worry? That the people who need the most support with energy costs are the ones who can’t access solar or batteries. If you rent, or can’t afford the upfront costs, you’re often stuck paying more.
It raises a big question:
Why is clean, affordable energy still a privilege, and not a right?

Have you heard of vampire energy before? It’s when appliances still use power when they’re plugged in, even if they’re switched off!
That sneaky power drain can add up to 10% of your energy bill, such a waste for stuff you’re not even using!
Easy Ways to Stop Wasting Power:
✅ Switch appliances off at the wall
✅ Use power boards to turn off multiple devices at once
✅ Unplug chargers, gaming consoles, and other appliances when you’re not using them

One thing we learned at our recent @ Home event (Fix My Grocery Bills) is maximising kitchen storage isn’t just about neatness, it helps reduce food waste, improve meal planning, and save you serious money!
By organising your fridge (and pantry) smarter, you can:
✅ Keep food fresh longer
✅ Stop overbuying (hello to those three jars of mustard!)
✅ Meal prep with ease
✅ Save money and reduce waste
Simple changes like storing produce correctly, grouping items by category, and doing a quick “shop your pantry” check before grocery shopping can make a huge difference.
How often do you clean out your fridge?
Should my compost be in the sun or shade?
Short answer: It depends! But here’s the scoop: Keeping your compost in partial shade is usually the sweet spot. Too much sun? It might dry out too fast. Too much shade? It could stay too soggy.
The trick is moisture balance, you want it to feel like a wrung-out sponge. If you’re in a super-hot climate, some shade helps. If you’re in a cooler spot, a little sun can give it a boost. Experiment with what works best in your backyard!
Where do you keep your compost? 👇
With Jo Taranto
There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to pantry storage, it’s all about what works for you!
> Glass jars - They look good, are easy to clean, and make swapping ingredients a breeze. No need for labels if you like to mix things up!
> Tupperware - Stackable and great for airtight storage.
> Keep it simple - As long as you can see what you’ve got and it’s easy to grab, then you’re winning. No need for a Pinterest-perfect setup!
The key is to create a pantry that feels functional, not overwhelming.
What’s your go-to storage hack?

My favorite composting style? Dalek-style!
It might sound like a sci-fi villain, but Dalek composting (aka cold composting) is my go-to method. Why?
✅ Low maintenance (great if you’re busy!)
✅ Just keep adding scraps, and let time do the work
✅ Works in small spaces
It’s not the fastest, but if you’re patient, you’ll end up with beautiful, crumbly compost, without much effort.
Are you a Dalek-style composter too? Or do you prefer hot composting or worm farms? Let’s chat compost!

My favorite composting tool? My aerator!
Why? Because air is needed for life, for us and for our compost. Your pile needs oxygen to break down properly. No air = stinky, slimy mess. (And no one wants that.)
Using an aerator helps mix things up, prevents smells, and speeds up decomposition. Plus, it’s oddly satisfying to give your compost a good fluff!
Do you aerate your compost? Or just let nature do its thing? Let us know below! ⬇

Did you know? That extra rice, roasted veggies, or yesterday’s noodles can turn into a flavour packed meal with a spoonful of sambal!
In our latest event (A New Twist on Chilli Crisp) for our @ Home members we learnt how to make Sambal with Lucy from @whodoesthedishes
This spicy, umami-rich condiment adds depth, heat, and a little magic to just about anything.
Here are some easy ways to revive your leftovers with sambal:
🍚 Mix it into fried rice for an instant flavour boost
🥪 Spread it on toast with avo, eggs, or cheese
🥗 Stir it into dressings for a zesty salad upgrade
🍲 Add it to soups or stews for extra depth
Have you tried Sambal before?
The #1 composting mistake? Not enough “browns”!
It’s easy to toss in fruit peels and veggie scraps, but if your compost is too wet and smelly, it’s probably missing “browns” like:
>Shredded paper/newspaper
>Dry leaves
>Cardboard (plain, no glossy prints!)
Think 50/50 balance—for every handful of food scraps, add a handful of dry material. This keeps the pile from turning into a slimy, stinky mess and helps it break down faster.
What’s your go-to composting “brown”? Drop it in the comments! 👇🍂
Food waste doesn’t just disappear—it breaks down in landfills and releases a whopping 13 million tonnes of greenhouse gases every year. (2.5% of Australia's total annual emissions)
But here’s the good news: composting can change that. Whether you’ve got a big backyard or live in an apartment, there’s a composting solution for you.
🌱 Worm farms - Perfect for small spaces, these little guys turn food scraps into nutrient-rich soil.
🌱 Compost bins - Great for gardens, these let nature do the work with minimal effort.
🌱 Bokashi buckets - Speed up the process indoors with fermentation, then bury the scraps in soil.
🌱 Electric composters - A high-tech option that quickly breaks down food waste, even in a small kitchen.
🌱 Community compost bin - Check out your local community gardens to see if they're happy to take your scraps or chat to a neighbour, they may have worms that need feeding!
There’s no one-size-fits-all—just pick what works for you and start turning scraps into something good.
We’ve all been there – hidden food gets forgotten and ends up wasted.
Our top tip: Keep it in sight! Store fruits and veggies on the fridge door shelves so you see them every day. And for those long-lasting condiments, pop them in the veggie boxes.
This simple tweak can help cut down on waste and keep your kitchen sustainable.
Feeling overwhelmed by 2025? You’re not alone. 💛 The good news? Resilience isn’t a magical superpower—it’s a set of skills we can all develop. Clinical psychologist @drahonaguha shared how we can strengthen our mental resilience by focusing on our physical, emotional, and social well-being.

A: If you want more pollinators in your garden you've got to put what they need in your garden.
What exactly is that?
Peter Cooley, founder of @indigigrow, recently shared with us in our @ HOME Program (here is a short snippet from the session) that you need a range of bright-coloured plants with sweet scents to attract more pollinators into your garden.
Peter suggests planting as many native plants as possible in your garden as they are magnets for our native pollinators!
We'd love to know, how many native plants do you have in your garden? And are you thinking about adding more?

Australia is making strides in recycling, with curbside bins and council initiatives diverting tons of glass, metal, and plastic from landfill.
But here's the kicker: a LOT of recyclable stuff still ends up in the trash.
Think complex items like multi-laminate packaging, beauty product containers, and even coffee pods!
You know, the ones that make you scratch your head and wonder, "Can I even recycle this?"
So what can we do about this?
Have you heard of @terracycleaus? They partner with brands to create free recycling programs for those hard to recycle items!
Did you know that you can head to Terracycle's website sign up to become a Public Drop-off Point? (Well, your house, or community space etc.)
If you want to be more sustainable (and help others to be as well!) this would be a great initiative to look into!

We love how cycling is good for the environment AND good for you!
It's a win-win!
By cycling, you're improving your health and well-being and contributing to a healthier planet.
But if you haven't been on your bike for a while it can be difficult to know where to start!
Thankfully, Charlene Bordley, founder of @addventageous and the Parramatta Bike Hub 🙂 has you covered with tips to 'Boost Your Cycling Confidence'.
Charlene recently joined us for an @ HOME Program Session, where she shared tips for anyone wanting to increase their cycling confidence.
We love how passionate she is about cycling! It's infectious!
If you've had some time away from cycling, are you ready to get back out there?

Here are a few small changes we can make @ HOME to keep our pollinators happy.
It's important we look after them because they play such a vital role in our ecosystem!
Plus looking after them also = looking after us! Who wouldn't want a backyard full of colourful flowers with sweet scents?!
A big thanks to Peter Cooley, founder of @indigigrow, for sharing these tips and so many more with us in our @ HOME Program!

Ever stood under a steaming hot shower, belting out your favourite tune, and thought, "Wow, I'm really making a difference in the world!"? Well, maybe not. But guess what? You totally can!
@thejotaranto, our founder and resident "water nerd," explained in a recent webinar, our showers use a lot of water and energy. In fact, heating that water can gobble up a whopping 25% of your electricity bill! Ouch.
Which is why... it's important to know how much water your showerhead is using per minute as it can help you determine how efficient it is.
If you want to work this out at home grab a 9 litre water bucket, turn your shower on to the normal pressure you would shower with and time how long it takes for your bucket to fill up.
Then, you want to use the following equation (60 divided by the time it took to fill your bucket) x 9L = L/minute (Flow rate of your shower).
Pop your answer below and we'll share with you how efficient your showerhead is from zero stars (very inefficient) to 5 stars (very efficient).

How good is it when you can do something that benefits you + the environment at the same time?
Planting a native garden pollinator paradise is a perfect example of this. You can enjoy the beautiful blooms and fabulous scents while keeping our ecosystems healthy and thriving!
We are grateful that Peter Cooley, CEO and founding member of First Hand Solutions Aboriginal Corporation, recently shared pollination tips with us at an event on our @ HOME Platform!

So, why are we at @ HOME so excited about EVs? Well, it's about more than just the cool tech. It's about creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for all!
Recently, we hosted an awesome webinar with EV expert Daniel Bleakley, Founder of Next System, on "Apartment Living and Owning an EV".
We learnt so much! But before you dive into the how, we believe it's important to start with the WHY!
Here are three reasons why EVs matter to us... can you think of any we may have missed?

Kim Boswell, the founder of @theforeveragenda and a sustainability champion with 25 years of experience under her belt, recently shared her insights with our @ HOME community. And trust us, her journey through the "woods of burnout" is as relatable as it gets!
Here, Kim is talking about the importance of looking for those 'small islands of sanity' to look after yourself if you catch yourself showing signs of burnout.
Tip 1: Prioritise sleep. Don't skip out on those Zzzs!
Tip 2: Take action! Get out in nature or start a conversation. When you're overwhelmed, it's easy to get stuck in a cycle of inaction, but even small steps can make a big difference!
Tip 3: Connect with your community. Reach out to friends, family or like-minded individuals.
From the tips above, we'd love to know what you can prioritise more of this week?

What is a community compost hub?
It's when you join forces with your neighbours to turn your collective food scraps into gardening gold!
Think of it as a team effort for a greener neighbourhood!
Dr Brook Clinton @brkclinton inton, a composting expert and environmental scientist, recently spoke in our @ HOME Program about "Setting up a Community Composting Hub."

At Good For the Hood, @HOME, we're all about finding simple, everyday ways to live more sustainably. And today, we're diving into the surprisingly impactful world of… showers. Yep, you read that right!
It might (or might not) shock you to know that up to water can gobble up to a whopping 25% of your electricity bill!
Can you believe that?
This is why @thejotaranto, our founder and resident "water nerd," is so passionate about helping people make their showers shorter and more efficient so that they can save both money and the environment!
Did you know that showers use up so much water and energy?

🚿 Did You Know? Most of Our Household Water Goes Down the Drain (Literally!)
Get this: most of the water we use @ HOME is shower and bath water! 🛀 Shocking, right? But don't worry, this also means we have a golden opportunity to conserve and reuse this precious resource.
We have put together some easy ways that you can make a (less of a) Splash @ HOME:
1. Swap your old shower head for a water-efficient one.
2. Pop a bucket in your shower to catch excess water.
3. Consider installing a greywater system to divert water from your washing machine or shower to your garden.
4. If you have a roof, you have the power to harvest rainwater. Set up a rainwater tank and watch your garden flourish (and your water bill shrink!).
Do you do any of these actions @ HOME to make less of a splash?

2. Shop around with providers.
3. Seal up gaps in your house! Don't let your heating or cooling out!
4. Take another look at your curtains! Are they helping you keep the warmth or cool in?
5. Look into getting solar panels for your home!
