Did you know the average Australian household spends around $2,300 on clothes every single year?
Over a decade, that adds up to $23,000!!
Yet, most of us still open our wardrobe doors every morning, stare into the abyss, and think: "I literally have zero things to wear."
During our recent @ HOME session, sustainable stylist Jo Gambale broke down why this happens: fast fashion has trained us to buy clothes like groceries.
We toss a $20 top onto the conveyor belt next to our milk, grabbing a cheap thrill to solve a short-term feeling. But once it hits our closet, it just gets lost in the clutter, leaving us right back at square one.
The real fix isn't buying another piece; it's shifting from panic-shopping to "romancing" what you already own:
- Book a "Wardrobe Date": Light a candle, put on your favourite playlist, and play dress-up in your own closet.
- Try zero-rules combos, layer dresses over pants, tuck oversized shirts, or mix colours you normally keep apart.
- Build a Camera-Roll Lookbook: Whenever you assemble a combo that makes you feel incredible, snap a mirror selfie and save it to an "Outfits" album on your phone. Next time you're in a rush, open your camera roll instead of browsing online sales.
- Become Fabric-Literate: Check tags before you buy (new or secondhand).
Prioritise natural fibres like linen, silk, wool, and cotton over cheap plastic synthetics that degrade after a few washes.
Shopping your own wardrobe gives you that dopamine hit without spending a single cent!
