Jo Answers the Web’s Most Searched Questions on Compost

Jo says some of those “maggots” might actually be soldier fly larvae, which are pretty handy compost helpers

Did you know composting doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune to set it up?  And that hose wriggly maggots in your compost aren’t always a bad thing? What about do you know where the best spot to put your bin is, in the sun or shade?

We sat down with Jo Taranto Good For The Hood Founder and susty expert to answer the most common composting questions Aussies have. From worm farm fails (RIP wormies) to composting a pair of jeans (yes, really), this vid is full of golden compost wisdom.

Here’s a sneak peek of what Jo covered:

Is it bad to have maggots in your compost?

Simply put: If it’s grey, it can stay. If it’s white, it’s not right. Jo says some of those “maggots” might actually be soldier fly larvae, which are pretty handy compost helpers. Don’t panic, just Google 'soldier fly larvae'.

Is compostable packaging legit?

Only if it says home compostable. Industrial compost logos aren’t the same, and not all packaging breaks down in your backyard. And honestly? Its best to avoid packaging when you can. BYO container, anyone?

Where should your compost bin go, in the sun or shade?

Jo suggests out of direct sun, especially on hot Aussie days. A little sunshine is fine, but keep it cool where you can.

Why do some people not want to compost?

Smells and bugs, are often what turns people away, but if you balance your greens (like food scraps) with browns (leaves, paper, mulch), your compost won’t pong and you’ll have healthy soil in no time.
