We welcome Knox to the @ HOME program

The City of Knox is the latest Victorian council to join the @ HOME program, an evidence-based, community-focused initiative designed to support households in living more sustainably.

Knox joins a growing list of councils committed to engaging their residents on climate, waste, and resilience in ways that are practical, empowering, and tailored to local needs.

About Knox: A diverse, suburban LGA with unique challenges and opportunities

Located 25km from Melbourne CBD and home to over 166,000 residents, Knox is a municipality with a strong connection to nature, boasting more than 300 parks and reserves and extensive creek networks ideal for walking and cycling.

The majority of residents live in detached homes, and the area is heavily car-dependent. It also features a mix of socio-economic profiles and CALD communities, with growing apartment developments and sub-divisions.

Why Knox joined the @ HOME program

Knox Council identified several key challenges impacting its residents that aligned with @ HOME’s goals, including:

  • The rising cost of living and energy bills
  • High car dependency and limited public transport
  • Waste management concerns, including bin contamination and capacity issues
  • Loss of green cover due to increasing development
  • Barriers to engagement due to time, complexity, and language

@ HOME provides a ready-to-roll model that can be adapted to Knox’s needs, helping Council engage more deeply with the community while reducing pressure on internal teams.

How @ HOME aligns with council priorities

Knox Council is already active in areas such as:

  • FOGO and waste minimisation
  • Water conservation
  • Climate adaptation and electrification
  • Community wellbeing and local volunteer support

The @ HOME program builds on this work by supporting real behaviour change at home. It’s not just about sharing information, it’s about helping Knox residents build everyday habits that are good for their wallet and the planet, through simple, community-driven actions.

Key strengths of the Knox community

Council noted several local assets that make the program promising in this context, including:

  • An active base of environmental volunteers and groups such as Knox Environment Society and Repair Café
  • A willingness to explore new models of engagement
  • A strong natural landscape that encourages outdoor, place-based learning
  • Local champions ready to engage and promote sustainable behaviour

Next steps and what success looks like

Knox is looking forward to embedding the program across the community and tracking outcomes such as:

  • Reduced bin contamination
  • Increased resident engagement and upskilling
  • Better access to information across cultural and language groups
  • Stronger local networks and sustainability champions

The approach is collaborative, flexible, and designed to support behaviour change over time, without requiring large resource investments from council.

We’re looking forward to working closely with Knox Council and its community to build on this strong foundation.
