In April, our co-founder Jo Taranto joined Bridget Kennedy of Sydney Edible Garden trail and 40 community members from North Sydney to look at grassroots sustainability. Conversations explored the joys of community action and its power to build stronger communities and create sustainable neighbourhoods.
The event looked at how collective action isn't just about environmental change and sustainability, but also about finding and maintaining meaningful connections with people who are doing community work. Bridget Kennedy reflected on her journey with various projects and how she has managed her own mental health and the issue of volunteer burnout along the way.
Jo also talked about how community members can get involved in projects no matter their age, political views, or background. "To me change happens in the suburbs and townships, millimetre by millimetre. It's done shoulder to shoulder with people of diverse opinions and it's done built on mutual trust and a respectful discourse. I also believe living within our planetary means is not a political issue and we should never be made to think it has to be one."
Thinking about community-led projects and reflecting on lived experiences, we discussed the ups and downs of grassroots action; sharing ways to stay positive and impact-focused while avoiding volunteer burnout in order to achieve long-term goals.
We were stoked to join the amazing conversations happening in the North Sydney Community Centre and their 'hood and have a chance to share questions, solutions, ideas, and inspiration!
